    Thus have I heard:

    At one time the Blessed One was in Rajagriha, on Eagles Peak, together with one thousand, two hundred and fifty monks. There were also an immeasurable, unlimited multitude of Bodhisattvas and the eight classes of gods, nagas and so forth, who were all assembled. At that time, the Pure Wisdom Bodhisattva was seated in the midst of this assembly. Because he aspired to extend compassion toward all sentient beings, he thought: “by what means do the Buddhas, Tathagatas, obtain the pure body, furnished with the marks of the great person?” Again he thought: “all classes of living beings are able to meet the Tathagata and approach him with offerings. The blessings that are obtained are without measure or limit. I do not yet know, however, what offerings living beings will make or what merit they will cultivate after the death of the Tathagata so as to bring about those roots of good merit that quickly lead to final, supreme enlightenment.” After thinking this, he then arose from his seat and bared his right shoulder, having bowed his head at the feet of the Buddha; he knelt upright, with palms in salutation and spoke to the Buddha, saying, “World Honored One, I wish to ask questions and hope that you deign to acknowledge them.” The Buddha said, “Noble son, I will teach according to what you ask.”

    如是我闻:一时,薄伽梵在王舍城鹫峰山顶,与大芯刍众千二百五十人俱。复有无量无边大菩萨众、天龙八部,悉皆云集。

    尔时清净慧菩萨在众中坐,为欲愍念诸有情故,作是思惟:「诸佛如来以何因缘,得清净身,相好具足?」复作是念:「诸众生类,得值如来,亲近供养,所获福报无量无边。未知如来般涅盘后,所有众生作何供养、修何功德,令彼善根速能究竟无上菩提?」作是念已,即从座起,偏袒右肩,顶礼佛足,长跪合掌,白佛言:「世尊!我欲请问,愿垂听许。」佛言:「善男子!随汝所问,我当为说。」

    尔时清净慧菩萨白佛言:「诸佛.如来.应.正等觉以何因缘,得清净身,相好具足?又诸众生得值如来,亲近供养,所获福报无量无边。未审如来般涅盘后,所有众生作何供养、修何功德,令彼善根速能究竟无上菩提?」

    尔时世尊告清净慧菩萨言:「善哉,善哉!汝能为彼未来众生发如是问。汝今谛听,善思念之,如说修行!吾当为汝分别解说。」清净慧菩萨言:「唯然,世尊!愿乐欲闻。」

    佛告清净慧菩萨言:「善男子!应知布施、持戒、忍辱、精进、静虑、智慧,慈、悲、喜、舍,解脱、解脱知见,力、无所畏,一切佛法、一切种智善清净故,如来清净。若于如是诸佛如来,以清净心种种供养,香花璎珞、幡盖敷具,布在佛前,种种严饰,上妙香水澡浴尊仪,烧香普熏运心法界。复以饮食、鼓乐、弦歌,赞咏如来不共功德,发殊胜愿,回向无上一切智海,所生功德,无量无边,乃至菩提,常令相续。所以者何?如来福、智不可思议,无数无等。善男子!诸佛世尊具有三身,谓法身、受用身、化身。我涅盘后,若欲供养此三身者,当供养舍利。然有二种:一者、身骨舍利;二者、法颂舍利。」即说颂曰:

    诸法从缘起 如来说是因

    彼法因缘尽 是大沙门说

    「男子、女人、苾刍五众应造佛像,若无力者,下至大如麸麦造窣睹波,形如枣许,剎竿如针,盖如麸片,舍利如芥子,或写法颂,安置其中。如上珍奇,而为供养,随己力能,至诚殷重,如我现身,等无有异。善男子!若有众生能作如是胜供养者,成就十五殊胜功德而自庄严:

    一者、常有惭愧;

    二者、发净信心;

    三者、其心质直;

    四者、亲近善友;

    五者、入无漏慧;

    六者、常见诸佛;

    七者、恒持正法;

    八者、能如说行;

    九者、随意当生净佛国土;

    十者、若生人中,大姓尊贵,人所敬奉,生欢喜心;

    十一者、生在人中,自然念佛;

    十二者、诸魔军众不能损恼;

    十三者、能于末世护持正法;

    十四者、十方诸佛之所加护;

    十五者、速得成就五分法身。」

    尔时世尊即说颂曰:

    我般涅盘后 能供养舍利 或造窣睹波 及以如来像

    于彼像塔处 涂拭曼荼罗 以种种香华 散布于其上

    以净妙香水 灌沐于像身 上味诸饮食 尽持以供养

    赞叹如来德 无量难思议 方便智神通 速至于彼岸

    获得金刚身 具三十二相 八十随形好 济度诸群生

    尔时清净慧菩萨闻是颂己,白佛言:「未来众生云何浴像?」佛告清净慧菩萨言:「汝等当于如来起正念心,勿着二边,迷于空有;于诸善品,渴仰无厌;三解脱门,善修智慧;常求出离,勿住生死;于诸众生,起大慈悲,愿得速成三种身故。

    善男子!我已为汝说四真谛、十二缘生、六波罗蜜,今更为汝及诸国王、王子、大臣、后宫妃后,天、龙、人、鬼说浴像法,诸供养中最为第一,胜以恒河沙等七宝布施。

    若浴像时,应以牛头栴檀、白檀、紫檀、沈水、熏陆、郁金香、龙脑香、零陵、藿香等,于净石上磨作香泥,用为香水,置净器中。于清净处,以好土作坛,或方或圆,随时大小,上置浴床,中安佛像,灌以香汤,净洁洗沐,重浇清水。所用之水,皆须净滤,勿使损虫。其浴像水,两指沥取,安自顶上,名吉祥水,泻于净地,莫令足踏。以细软巾,拭像令净,烧诸名香,周遍香馥,安置本处。

    善男子!由作如是浴佛像故,能令汝等人、天大众,现受富乐,无病延年;于所愿求,无不遂意;亲友眷属,悉皆安隐;长辞八难,永出苦源;不受女身,速成正觉。既安置已,更烧诸香,亲对像前,虔诚合掌,而说赞曰:

    我今灌沐诸如来 净智功德庄严聚

    愿彼五浊众生类 速证如来净法身

    戒定慧解知见香 遍十方剎常芬馥

    愿此香烟亦如是 无量无边作佛事

    亦愿三涂苦轮息 悉令除热得清凉

    皆发无上菩提心 永出爱河登彼岸

    佛说此经已,是时众中有无量无边菩萨,得无垢三昧;无量诸天得不退智;诸声闻众,愿求佛果;八万四千众生,皆发阿耨多罗三藐三菩提心。

    尔时清净慧菩萨白佛言:「世尊!幸蒙大师哀愍我等,教浴像法。我今劝化国王、大臣、一切信心乐功德者,于日日中澡沐尊仪,获大利益,常当顶受,欢喜奉行!」
