  • A Journey of Discovery: Exploring Nature and Wisdom at the Garden Center

On September 20, 2015, DAMI practitioners organized a delightful trip to Long Island. Our first destination was a Garden Center, a charming space filled with trees, plants, and garden decorations.

Setting off in the early morning, we were greeted by breathtaking views from the car—blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and stretches of lush woods—all creating a serene and refreshing experience.

Upon arrival at the Garden Center, we discovered a wide array of flowers, trees, and uniquely crafted ornaments.

Children were especially enchanted by the crafts, eagerly stopping to take photos. Outside the store stood statues of terracotta warriors, Buddha, the Chinese god of wealth, and a pagoda reminiscent of those in temples. It was a pleasant surprise to encounter elements of Chinese culture in this setting.

After briefly exploring the Garden Center, we hadn’t seen anything particularly remarkable. Then, the Venerable Master arrived, and the atmosphere instantly became lively. Everyone eagerly gathered around, knowing we were about to learn something meaningful.

Master pointed to a nearby tree and shared that it was a coffee tree. Only then did we notice its large pods and fallen coffee beans scattered on the ground. Master elaborated on the effects of coffee on the human body.

Continuing the walk, Master asked if anyone could identify which plants had medicinal properties and their effects on the body. No one could answer. Master then walked with us, pointing out various plants and explaining their unique characteristics and connections to the body’s meridians.

With Master’s insights, the plants before us seemed to come alive, no longer mere decorations but vibrant, friendly presences. At one point, Master paused near a cluster of blue-purple chrysanthemums and explained that they were Silybum marianum. He shared that these flowers are cooling and beneficial for liver health. Master asked if we felt a sense of comfort standing near them. Mr. Xia, crouching nearby, smiled and remarked that he hadn’t wanted to leave. Master explained that it was the Silybum marianum “communicating” their characteristics and functions. This remarkable experience transformed our understanding of plants, deepening our appreciation of their beauty, purpose, and connection to human health.

In modern scientific research, studying a plant typically involves observing its external form, smelling its fragrance, tasting its flavor, analyzing its chemical composition using scientific instruments, or conducting animal experiments to determine its pharmacological effects. Yet, due to various external factors, our understanding of these plants remains incomplete, and we are unable to fully map their effects on the body or their connections to meridians.

However, the profound truth is often simple. With Master’s guidance, understanding plants becomes straightforward, precise, and efficient—free from unnecessary complications. Master demonstrated once again that by diligently cultivating awareness, purifying the mind, and refining oneself, Buddhists can directly connect with nature. This approach simplifies what might otherwise seem complex.

To truly comprehend the world, we must commit to Buddhist practice, elevate our awareness, and purify our bodies and minds. This method transcends reliance on physical sight, offering a deeper, more intuitive way to understand the essence of life.

As part of this extraordinary lesson, Master selected specific flowers and encouraged us to purchase them and place them in our homes so that everyone could benefit from their presence. It was truly a rare and invaluable teaching experience delivered on-site!
