Xinhua News, Nanchang, March 5 – The Donglin Buddha, known as the world’s tallest Amitabha Buddha copper statue, has recently completed its gold leaf application, marking the near-completion of the Donglin Buddha project. The grand consecration ceremony is expected to be held within this year.
In May 2007, following approval from the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the Donglin Buddha project officially commenced in Xingzi County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, with a total investment of approximately 1 billion yuan. According to Venerable Master Shi Da’an, the abbot of Donglin Temple, the funding for the construction of the Donglin Buddha was entirely sourced from donations by devotees and benevolent individuals from around the world. Upon completion, the site will avoid commercialization and will not charge entrance fees.
The 48-meter-tall Donglin Buddha integrates design elements inspired by the grandeur of Tang Dynasty Buddha statues, such as those in the Longmen Grottoes. It represents the pinnacle of contemporary religious art and stands as the tallest open-air Amitabha Buddha copper statue in the world. The project centers around the Amitabha Buddha welcoming statue and includes various components such as the Pure Land Culture Zone, the New Donglin Temple, the Bhikkhuni Academy, the Hermitage Culture Zone, the Rest and Retreat Area, the Ocean Assembly Hall, and the Virtuous Abode Area.
